Heal Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Video X-ray may find cracks other doctors miss

There are two types of fractures: acute and stress.  Acute fractures occur when you take a direct hit or blow to the foot (such as seriously stubbing your toe).  With acute fractures, you may feel a direct pain at the point of fracture, hear a “pop” at the time of injury, see discoloration and swelling, and have a deformed looking foot/toe. Stress fractures occur as a result of repetitive stress to the foot/ankle/toes and are usually hairline fractures as opposed to breaks.  Symptoms of stress fractures include swelling without bruising, pain relief with rest, and pinpoint pain when touched.

Because fractures and sprains have similar symptoms, it is important to have Dr. Prant do an evaluation to ensure proper treatment.  Improper treatment or lack of treatment can lead to arthritis, bone deformity, and chronic pain.  Dr. Prant can often find fractures invisible on traditional X-rays with the use of his video X-ray.

Usual treatments for fractures include:

  • Rest. Sometimes rest is all that is needed to treat an acute or stress fracture of the toe.
  • Splinting. The toe may be fitted with a splint to keep it in a fixed position.
  • Rigid or Stiff-Soled Shoe. A stiff-soled shoe or other form of immobilization may be used to protect the fractured bone while it is healing.
  • Surgery. Some traumatic fractures of the metatarsal bones require surgery, especially if the break is badly displaced.
  • Follow-Up Care. Dr. Prant will provide instructions for care following surgical or non-surgical treatment. Physical therapy, exercises and rehabilitation may be included in a schedule for return to normal activities.
