With acute fractures, you may feel a direct pain at the point of fracture, hear a “pop” at the time of injury, see discoloration and swelling, and have a deformed looking foot/toe. Stress fractures occur as a result of repetitive stress to the foot/ankle/toes and are usually hairline fractures as opposed to breaks. Symptoms of stress fractures include swelling without bruising, pain relief with rest, and pinpoint pain when touched.
