Sports injuries
Sports injuries are common as the feet bear the weight of the entire body and, when jumping and running, that weight can be up to 20 times the person’s body weight. There are 26 bones in the foot, 33 joints and 112 ligaments, all of which can be injured. Sports injuries can come in the form of fractures, stress fractures, lacerations, strains, sprains, plantar fasciitis (heel pain) and tendonitis from overuse, improper footwear, intense workouts, or insufficient warm-ups.
As a seasoned podiatrist, Dr. Prant is an expert on the anatomy of the foot and has working knowledge of the individual sports and the injuries that are commonly associated with them. A thorough examination is performed along with any needed x-rays or ultrasound scans to determine the extent of the injury for proper treatment.
Treatment for sports injuries can include rest, taping, inserts, orthotics, braces, physical therapy, stretches, or radial wave therapy for heel pain.
